Gantt Chart History

Gantt chart was developed by Henry L. Gantt (1861-1919), an American engineer, in 1917. He created the first Gantt chart for planning building ships in the times of First World War. The chart proved to be a powerful analytical instrument that it had not undergone any changes for many years. It was only in 90s of the last century when link lines between tasks were added to the Gantt chart.

Although now considered standard practice, the introduction of the technique was considered quite revolutionary at the time. In recognition of his contributions, the Henry Laurance Gantt medal is awarded for distinguished achievement in management and service to the community.

Henry Gantts contribution to the management process is honored today through the The Henry Laurence Gantt Medal. The award established in 1929 is given for distinguished achievement in management and for service to the community.
